Cut it open and it's jet black all the way through — not stained, not painted. That natural depth of colour is something no finish can replicate. The dark pieces in this set are carved from Ebony. The light pieces are Boxwood — the traditional chess carving wood, used by master craftsmen for centuries. Boxwood has an exceptionally fine, tight grain that allows a level of carving detail most woods simply can't hold. That's why the dragon knights are possible: the scales running down the mane, the open mouth, the tail — each one hand-carved by skilled artisans in India. The board pairs Ebony dark squares with Maple light squares — hard, pale, and clean-grained.
